New Bern's Blackbeard and Queen Anne's Revenge
New Bern's Palatine Church & High German Chapel/Church of England

"John Edward Titschke (Teache) was an original New Bernian who arrived here with Baron De Graffenreid's first group of settlers which consisted entirely of German Palatines who arrived in New Bern, June,1710. John Edward Titschke was a "Robin Hood" for De Graffenreid's abandoned New Bern German and Swiss Palatine Colony. After the close of the indian war, about 1713-14, the German Palatine people were left scattered all over Eastern North Carolina. ......Many of Titschke's descendants survived their cruel treatment in the new country and live in ...... and all over our nation. John Edward Titschke (Teache) arrived in the new country with the first group of German Palatines escorted by John Lawson. John Lawson later became the Surveyor General for the New Bern Colony of Palatines. Truly an interesting story about New Bern's Historic Heritage and the unknown part of the Town's rich legacy. We have enjoyed the research and writing we recently concluded about Blackbeard, John Edward Titschke (Teache, Teachey) and Baron Von De-Graffenreid's founding of New Bern, North Carolina. We want to share with you some of our story about New Bern's Pirates and Politicians. .......The following are passages from our writings of Titschke (Teache) the pirate and the founding history of New Bern...... and De-Graffenreid's historic venture that lead to the settlement of historic New Bern, in 1710. The Politicians took everything the pirate's people (the German Palatines) had, the pirate John Edward Titschke (Teache, Teachey), Blackbeard did his best to get it all back for them. We want you to know the relationship between Blackbeard's Flagship, "Queen Anne's Revenge"; the Flagship's name and how the emblematic name related to the historic town of New Bern, North Carolina. We should never forget our humble beginnings, nor the forefathers who endured the vicious ethnic hatred; yet courageously they endured till the end steadfastly, continuing to build the hallowed paths which we tread upon finding the freedoms and fruits we have available and enjoy today. Why was Titschke's prized flagship named "Queen Anne's Revenge? Was the naming of the Flagship a symbolic statement to Queen Anne about the plight of the German Palatines who founded New Bern, North Carolina. Will John Edward Titschke (Teache, Teachey), North Carolina's Blackbeard, be hailed and fondly saluted, although belated and without fanfare, as the first to recognize and disseminate the provenance of a great societal democracy? Will historians recognize Blackbeard, although not a politician by tenure, but as such, you know!!, the first and finest democrat to grace the sandy beaches and be welcomed here truly a great Tar Heel and "AMONGST THE FIRST TO OUR SHORE". .... To hide the politician's shame, the truth is too real and well documented in the archives, requiring no imagination to discern the right from the wrong recording of history..... The German Palatines were cordially received into the bosom of England by the gracious, merciful and compassionate QUEEN ANNE........... Titschke's most prized possession was his beloved Flagship, "Queen Anne's Revenge". History has recorded the Flagship was a gift to Titschke by a retiring pirate desiring clemency from his piracy deeds. The vessel was known by the name "Revenge", and Titschke added an appropriate prefix "Queen Anne's" (the anguished plight of the German Palatine people) and that is how the Lady begot her name. Titschke's favorite anchorage hide-away was located just west of Ocracoke Inlet, a place known as "Titschke's Hole". It was from this location, Titschke launched most of his mercy piracy missions....... The identity of the German Prince was simple to define once we accepted the unguarded facts and simple realities that surrounded the notable events in New Bern's history. De-Graffenreid's German Colony, hidden, but not too well and "Built So Good" a few German Palatines survived to tell the story. Some of their footprints lead straight to our very own door steps........... Blackbeard was not the perverted character some historians have portrayed.........he was also a good and loving person as well as being the very best pirate associated with North Carolina's history....... Blackbeard took it upon himself to see that the needs of the German and Swiss Palatine people were fulfilled in their hour of crisis. Blackbeard chose to identify to the entire world the profoundly cruel, provocative circumstances the German and Swiss Palatines were faced with in the new country. Blackbeard chose to become a pirate, not a politicians, for that we should all be thankful. ......... Even before the nation was born; Blackbeard's grandchildren, Lieutenant Daniel Tetchey, Jr., Private Daniel Tetchey Boney, Corporal James Wimbark Boney, Private John Boney and Private Wimbrick Boney helped getting the colonies off their scared and skinny knees. Steadying the rising Lady's stance to her wobbling legs, standing her upright, proud the province would be represented by one of the original thirteen stars and stripes represented in the colors she would bear. They were a part of those giving her strength to bear her own colors; they knew her as "Old Betsy", "Lady Bess" as well as "Old Glory" Too ............ Remember Blackbeard's legacy and what it represented to us, "THE SURVIVAL OF A REPUBLIC'S DEMOCRACY IS WHOLLY DEPENDENT UPON THE DILIGENCE OF THOSE WHOM SHALL INHERIT HER DESTINY". Prepare yourself, the time will soon come when you will .......... The research has proven without any doubts "Queen Anne's Revenge" is represening an emblematic story from Blackbeard, to the gracious great Queen Anne of England, who had received John Edward Titschke (Teache, Teachey), Blackbeard into the bosom of England, from Rotterdam in the Netherlands, June 2, 1709. ......... The Lady's name represented the deeds and sad tales of this writing. The Lady, "Queen Anne's Revenge", was a pentacle of Titschke's pride and his his many success', but it also is an emblematic story about the miserable plight of the German Palatine people who settled New Bern. ................... It also appears Titschke wasn't saying thank you to the gracious Queen Anne and with the complete story having now been told, we can appreciate the reason why not. ........... Baron De-Graffenreid described in his memoirs, "it really was the ones who stayed behind the real credit for the founding of the Little German Town should rest. For it was I who left them and returned to my homeland to spend the rest of my days ....... History has recorded the heroic and intricate deeds of Blackbeard's role in assuring the survival of many German and Swiss Palatine Families in the new country. They were left here to fend for themselves against the ethnic hatred and political abuse without the aid of government or church to assist them. They lived in profound poverty, unindentured slaves for the greater part of thirty years ......... Yes, the Roosters got it right on that crisp friday morning, November 22, 1718, even today you can hear the sobbing cries from the Island's mainland as they continue to tell the sad story. ....... The futile cries of the Roosters mark the hidden era in North Carolina's history....... Whereas we, the Subscribers, have agreed and concluded to build one house of Worship or Chapel on the Trent River in Craven County in the Province of.........The cost of which shall come out of one stock of cattle which a certain person among them hath willed and given for the purpose.... for the use of the Palatines and Germans. Now we the subscribers hereof have chosen and elected Jacob Sheets, John Kinsey and Peter Remm to build the said church or Chapel for the use of The High Germans and the Church of England ...........to be built on the South side of the Trent River at the Ferry location at John Kinsey's Plantation........said Chapel is to be thirty (30) feet long and twenty (20) feet wide by twelve (12) feet high..... the name of the same is to be called THE PALATINE CHURCH or the HIGH GERMAN CHAPEL ...... as witnessed our seals, this second (2nd) day of August, 1740: John Simons-Jacob Sheets-William Frank Christian Slobbock-George Snyder- John Letcher Miller-Peter Andrews John Kinsey-William Barn (Baren)- Jacob Fulch-Richard Re(i)mer-John Re(i)mer Michael Pickel-Danl. Fulch-Alexander Steel Michael Remnir-Christopher Slobbock, Sr. John Peter Remm-Matthew Resenover Casper Resshead-Vincent Ameat(h) George Coons-George Connegur Jacob Ipock <> Do you suppose we could be certified as true native New Bernians or will the City and County fathers (Politicians) run us out of town for sharing the family's historic story???...the same story Blackbeard was telling through the symbolic message, "Queen Anne's Revenge. Yes, purely by coincidence, one of Blackbeard's Seventh great grandsons exposed the true story about his seventh great grandfather. The writing reveals what happened to all the Palatine land purchased by Queen Anne to be distributed to the Palatines desiring to relocate in America. This history is not the "predigested history" (De-Graffenried) or the sorted out variety designed for our consumption. This is the real history, enjoy it. This is thee hundred years of wonderfully, enlightening, provocative and somewhat distorted from the present day history. It is a true history and is well documented and easily available amongst the historic archives of North Carolina" CELEBRATING NEW BERN'S TRICENTENNIAL 1710-2010 copy {c} rights 2001 |
